Karwa Chauth 2025: According to the Hindu calendar, the holy festival of Karwa Chauth is being celebrated across the country today, Friday, October 10. This festival is celebrated every year on the Chaturthi of the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month. The day of Karwa Chauth holds special significance in Sanatan Dharma. This day is very special for married women. On Karwa Chauth, married women observe a waterless fast, praying for the long life of their husbands. They fast the entire day without food or water and break the fast in the evening after offering Arghya to the moon. This fast continues from sunrise till Chandra Darshan.
Married women observe this fast all day, without eating or drinking anything, only with love and faith. But when the time comes to view the moon at night and break the fast, it often appears late, prolonging their wait. There’s actually a scientific reason behind this delay.

The timing of moonrise is determined by astronomy. This science explains the motions of the planets, the sun, and the moon. Both the moon and Earth orbit each other, and due to Earth’s tilt and different locations, the moonrise time varies slightly each day.
Each day, the Moon moves a little bit eastward. Because it orbits the Earth eastward, it must reach a new position each day, causing its rising time to be set back by about 50 minutes from the previous night. This happens because the Moon moves about 13 degrees each day, and the Earth must rotate slightly more to bring it back into view.
Karwa Chauth Astronomy Facts: What does astronomy say?

On average, the Moon rises 50 minutes late each day, but this difference can sometimes be a few minutes or even up to an hour. It takes 24 hours for the Earth to complete one rotation on its axis, but during this time, the Moon has already advanced in its orbit. Therefore, the Earth must rotate a little more for the Moon to be visible again on the horizon.
The Moon doesn’t move at the same speed every day. This is because its orbit is elliptical, not perfectly round. When the Moon is closer to Earth, it moves faster, and when it’s farther away, it moves more slowly. This causes the Moon to appear earlier at times and later at other times.
Karwa Chauth Moon Delay Reason

If you’re in a location surrounded by tall buildings or mountains, even if the moon has risen, you won’t see it until it rises above those obstacles. Furthermore, the Earth’s atmosphere acts as a lens. When the moon is near the horizon, its light is bent, making it appear slightly higher than it actually is. This makes it appear as if the moon has risen early when, in reality, it hasn’t fully risen.
