Karwa Chauth Story: Read this story during the fast today
Long ago, a wealthy family lived with seven brothers and one sister. Her name was Veeravati. The brothers loved their sister very much. On the first Karva Chauth after her marriage, Veeravati was visiting her parents’ home. She fasted before sunrise and remained hungry and thirsty throughout the day. By evening, she became very weak.
The brothers couldn’t bear to see their sister in such a state. They thought that if the moon rose early, they would be able to break their fast. They placed a lamp behind a tree and said, “Sister, look, the moon has risen.” Veeravati, believing her brothers, mistook the flame of the lamp for the moon and broke her fast. But as soon as she broke the fast, her husband’s health deteriorated, and he fainted. Veeravati began to cry.
Then Goddess Parvati appeared and said that all this had happened because she had broken the fast incompletely. She advised Veeravati to observe the fast with full discipline the following year. The following year, Veeravati observed the Karva Chauth fast with full rituals. By the grace of Goddess Parvati, her husband recovered and was blessed with a long life. Since then, this fast has been observed every year on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of the Kartik month.
