Justice Swaminathan on Hindu Rights: Tamil Nadu government approaches Supreme Court

The Tamil Nadu government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court’s order allowing the lighting of Karthigai Deepam at a temple near a dargah. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the petition on December 5. The case concerns the “Deepathoon,” a stone lamp pillar in Tirupparamkundram, where devotees of the Arulmighu Subramania Swamy Temple light the traditional Karthigai Deepam every year.

High Court order and controversy

On December 4, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court rejected the appeals filed by the District Collector and the Police Commissioner. This meant that the earlier order by a single judge remained in place. According to that order, devotees were allowed to light lamps at Deepathoon.

When the authorities did not follow this order, the same judge issued another order on December 3. This new order said that devotees could go ahead and light the lamps themselves, and it instructed the CISF to provide security for them.
