Indian Railways New Rail Line: The Ministry of Railways has officially approved the construction of the Rajpura Bypass Line, a key infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion on one of Northern Railway’s busiest routes.
After receiving approval from the Hon’ble Minister of Railways, S. Ravneet Singh, while sharing the development with the media, said that the project has been sanctioned by the Railway Board. The project is valued at Rs. 411.96 crore and has received formal approval under the Railway Board’s endorsement.
Indian Railways New Rail Line: Route Alignment and Strategic Importance
Ravneet Singh stated that the sanctioned work includes the construction of a 13.46 km-long bypass line connecting the New Shambhu Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) station with Kauli station on the existing Rajpura–Bathinda line. This project falls under the “Umbrella Work 2025–26” initiative for new rail line development across Indian Railways.
The primary objective of the project is to decongest the Rajpura Yard, which is currently operating at saturated capacity. The bypass will allow trains to avoid the yard altogether, significantly reducing delays and operational pressure.
Punjab News: Addressing Capacity Challenges on a Busy Corridor
Highlighting the urgency of the project, Ravneet Singh noted that the Ambala–Jalandhar section is among the busiest corridors on the Northern Railway network. Without infrastructure upgrades, line capacity utilization in this section is projected to cross 165% by 2030–31, driven by increasing traffic demand.
The new bypass will provide direct train movement, enabling both freight and passenger trains to bypass the congested Rajpura Yard. Direct connectivity to the Dedicated Freight Corridor at New Shambhu will enhance freight logistics efficiency and improve train speeds.
This approval marks a significant step toward modernizing rail infrastructure in the region, ensuring that rail capacity expansion keeps pace with India’s growing transportation and logistics requirements.
