The town of Tibbi has been transformed into a virtual fortress since early morning in anticipation of a large public gathering (mahapanchayat) called to protest against the ethanol factory. A heavy police presence has been deployed in the town, and all roads leading in and out have been blocked. The market has been shut down, and internet services have been suspended. The movement, which has been ongoing for the past 15 months under the leadership of the ‘Remove the Factory, Save the Area’ struggle committee, intensified after the mahapanchayat on Wednesday.
