Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Updates: India’s road network is improving quickly, and the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is one of the biggest and most important projects in this development. It’s not just another highway it’s a major effort to connect Delhi and Mumbai, the country’s two key economic cities, with faster, safer, and more comfortable travel. The expressway will have six to eight lanes, and it can be expanded to 12 lanes in the future. Once the entire road is completed, the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai will drop from around 25 hours to about 12.5 hours.
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Updates: Which states will be included?
The expressway passes through six states: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The route begins at the DND Flyway and Sohna in Delhi and ends at Virar and the JNPT Port in Maharashtra. Its total length is approximately 1,355 kilometers, of which 774 kilometers has been opened to passengers. The remaining work is expected to be completed by March 2026.

Delhi NCR News Today: Route divided into 4 main sections:
1. Delhi to Faridabad and KMP Expressway
This section is considered the gateway to the expressway. Starting from DND, it runs through Okhla and Kalindi Kunj to Faridabad. Approximately 24 kilometers of this section is operational, making the journey from Faridabad to Noida a mere 20 minutes. It will also connect to Jewar Airport in the future.
2. Sohna to Vadodara (longest section)
This section, approximately 845 kilometers long, connects several districts in Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. As it passes through industrial areas, it will be extremely beneficial for trade and freight transportation.
3. Vadodara to Virar
This section significantly reduces the distance between Gujarat and Maharashtra. It connects areas like Navsari and Valsad. Further on, it leads to Virar, near Mumbai.
4. From Virar to JNPT Port
This final section will reduce logistics costs and boost export-import by providing faster connectivity between Mumbai and JNPT port.
Modern toll systems and facilities
The expressway will have a fully automated, FASTag-based toll system. Entry and exit points are being established every 50 kilometers. Convenience centers will be located every 93 kilometers along the route, featuring petrol pumps, hotels, charging stations, ATMs, and restaurants. For safety, helipads and trauma centers are being built every 100 kilometers.
Environment and technology will get an edge
- About 20 lakh trees are being planted along the entire route.
- A special lane of the electric highway is being constructed.
- Heavy electric vehicles will be able to run at a speed of 120 km/h.
- Several animal overpasses and underpasses to protect wildlife.
- Optical fiber is being laid along the roadside, which will also strengthen the digital network.
