Delhi Cloud Seeding Failed: Several efforts were made to trigger artificial rainfall in Delhi to help reduce pollution levels. An aircraft departed from Kanpur, conducting three trials during which eight flares were released. However, the much-anticipated cloud seeding operation did not yield the desired results in producing rain across parts of Delhi. According to IIT Kanpur Director Meindra Agarwal, the primary reason for the limited success was the lack of adequate moisture in the clouds. He also emphasized that cloud seeding should be seen only as an emergency measure and not a long-term solution to Delhi’s pollution problem.

Following the unsuccessful attempt to generate artificial rain in Delhi, the team is now preparing for another round, with greater optimism about achieving successful rainfall this time. Director Meendra Agarwal explained that during the previous trial, the moisture level in the clouds was quite low—only about 15–20 percent—which significantly reduced the likelihood of rain. However, the experiment has boosted the team’s confidence to move forward with further efforts. It’s worth noting that the IIT Kanpur-led team had used a combination consisting of 20 percent silver iodide, along with rock salt and common salt, to promote cloud formation.

To address Delhi’s pollution problem, the Delhi government approved a plan for artificial rainfall on May 7. The project was allocated a budget of about ₹3.21 crore to carry out five trials. Each trial is estimated to cost around ₹60 lakh, and three of these trials have already been completed.

What did IIT Kanpur say?

IIT Kanpur said that the cloud-seeding campaign scheduled for today in Delhi has been postponed due to insufficient moisture in the clouds as the process is highly dependent on favourable atmospheric conditions, hence another attempt to induce artificial rain will be made soon.
