Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated to the ‘very poor’ category, with AQI levels crossing 500 in several parts of the city. In response to the worsening pollution, the government has enforced GRAP-4 restrictions. Under Phase 4 of GRAP, only BS-6, CNG and electric vehicles will be permitted to enter the city. Construction activities have been suspended, except for essential services. Additionally, 50% of employees in both government and private offices will work from home, while schools will operate in a hybrid mode, allowing students to attend classes either in person or online.
Delhi Air Pollution: AQI increased rapidly
Delhi’s AQI had reached 431 at 4 pm on Saturday, which increased to 441 in just two hours. Explaining the reasons for the sharp increase in AQI, the CAQM said that low wind speed and stagnant air were causing pollution to spread rapidly.
Delhi School News: Classes to be in hybrid mode
In an order issued on December 13, the Delhi Directorate of Education announced that the directive will apply to all government, aided and private schools under the Delhi government, NDMC, MCD and the Delhi Cantonment Board. Schools have been directed to provide both online and offline learning options wherever online facilities are available. The arrangement will continue until further orders, and school principals have been instructed to immediately notify parents about the decision.
Delhi’s AQI in ‘severe plus’ category
The air quality in Delhi has reached the very poor category. When the AQI reaches above 450, it is considered ‘severe plus’, which is the most dangerous level. This poses a serious threat to the health of all people. The AQI on Saturday evening was 448, and the 24-hour average was 349. Due to the rapid increase in AQI, the air quality went above the hazardous limit by Sunday morning. In view of this situation, the Commission for Air Quality Management implemented GRAP-IV in the entire NCR.
Delhi Air Pollution: What are the restrictions under GRAP-IV?
- After the implementation of GRAP-IV, all types of construction work have been stopped in Delhi and NCR.
- Stone crushing units have been ordered to be shut down across the NCR.
- Mining activities have also been banned.
- Strict restrictions have been imposed on the movement of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi.
- Schools up to class 5th will be operated in hybrid mode (online + offline).
