Cyclone Shakti Gujarat: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released important information regarding the monsoon. According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is expected to withdraw from the remaining parts of Gujarat, some areas of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and several parts of Maharashtra in the next three to four days. Normally, the monsoon withdrawal from Maharashtra begins on October 5th, but this year, the process stopped on September 26th.

Cyclone Shakti Gujarat: Reason for delay in withdrawal

This delay has been attributed to a series of weather systems forming in the Bay of Bengal. The first system, moving northwestward, brought rain to central and northwest India. Cyclone Shakti then formed near Gujarat, drawing in more moisture. A new system then formed in the Bay of Bengal, reaching Bihar, and the rain continued. This further delayed the monsoon withdrawal process.

Although Pune and the surrounding areas haven’t received much rain, rainfall in other regions is delaying the monsoon’s withdrawal from the state. Meteorologist Anupam Kashyapi said that while there may be some light rain around October 8th and 9th, heavy or continuous rain is unlikely. He said that Cyclone Shakti not only sucked away moisture but also disrupted the winds that help the monsoon retreat.

This year, the first week of October has been relatively calm in Maharashtra. The light rain that typically occurs during the monsoon’s withdrawal hasn’t been seen this time. Most parts of the state, including major cities like Mumbai and Pune, haven’t seen the monsoon’s withdrawal yet, but the Meteorological Department predicts that it may be completely gone by October 11th.

According to former climate research chief K. S. Hosalikar, whenever a weather system forms in the Arabian Sea or the Bay of Bengal, it halts the monsoon’s withdrawal. He explained that Cyclone Shakti, currently active in the Arabian Sea, will likely weaken into a depression by October 7th. After this, the monsoon withdrawal process may resume.
