Baiga tribals assault: In a disturbing incident that has ignited widespread outrage across Madhya Pradesh, a member of the Baiga tribe—classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG)—was brutally assaulted by private security personnel near the Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) Nigahi project in Singrauli. Although the footage recently surfaced on social media, the encounter reportedly occurred two months ago when Anne Lal Baiga and his wife entered the coal plant premises to collect firewood.

Accused of theft by the guards, the man was subjected to a violent physical beating. Following the circulation of the video, local police registered an FIR under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. While the main suspect remains under investigation, the incident has sparked a heated political debate over tribal safety.

Atrocities done by officials

The assault took place at the Nigahi project site, a major coal mining area managed by Northern Coalfields Limited. According to local reports, Anne Lal Baiga and his spouse had crossed into the industrial zone—a common practice for local villagers seeking fuel—when they were intercepted.

The footage captures a private security in-charge allegedly leading the assault. Despite the victim’s vulnerable status, he was accused of trespassing and attempted theft before being physically struck. The delay in the video’s release has raised questions regarding the initial reporting of the crime and the safety of tribal communities living on the periphery of industrial hubs.

Legal and Political Response

Police authorities in Singrauli have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway. Key details include:

  • Charges: An FIR has been filed involving sections of the SC/ST Act and relevant portions of the Indian Penal Code regarding physical assault.

  • Arrests: Reports indicate that two individuals have been detained, though official confirmation of their roles is pending.

  • The Suspect: The primary aggressor identified in the footage is a senior member of a private security firm contracted by the plant.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Congress party leaders, who have used the event to highlight a pattern of “tribal neglect” in the region. Critics argue that while the land is utilized for high-value mining, the indigenous populations—particularly PVTGs like the Baiga—are often marginalized or treated with hostility by corporate security forces.

Who are the the Baigas

The Baiga are one of India’s most ancient indigenous communities, primarily residing in the Mandla, Shahdol, and Singrauli districts of Madhya Pradesh. Because of their “Particularly Vulnerable” status, they are entitled to specific legal protections and welfare schemes. This assault has intensified calls for better sensitivity training for security units operating in tribal-heavy belts and more stringent oversight of the mining industry’s impact on local inhabitants.

As the investigation continues, activists and community leaders are demanding not only the arrest of the perpetrators but also compensation for the victim and his family to address the trauma and public humiliation caused by the recorded assault.
