The contributions of the late Ashwini Kumar Chopra live on in our hearts, and this event serves as an opportunity to pay homage to him and remember his selfless service to society.
Born on June 11, 1956, Ashwini Kumar Chopra came from a family deeply rooted in the world of journalism. He was the eldest son of the third generation of the family that owned the Hind Samachar newspaper group. His lineage was not only one of publishers and journalists but also of martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting against terrorism during the turbulent times in Punjab.

His grandfather, Lala Jagat Narain, and his father, Romesh Chander, were assassinated in 1981 and 1984, respectively. These killings added a dark chapter to the history of Punjab Kesari, earning newspaper title of “the newspaper of martyred journalists” for its unwavering stance against terrorist forces. This legacy of loss and resilience must have profoundly influenced Ashwini in his professional life and his commitment to the greater mission of truth and justice.

Ashwini’s academic history is as impressive as his professional career. He earned his undergraduate degree from Guru Nanak Dev University and then pursued a Master’s degree in Journalism from Punjab University. His thirst for knowledge couldn’t be satisfied with just that, and he went on to pursue a second Master’s degree in Journalism from one of the world’s leading universities.
Alongside this academic background, he worked for the San Francisco Chronicle for six months and eventually returned to his home country, India. He joined the Times of India team in Delhi, having previously worked under Punjab Kesari, where he later served as the editor-in-chief.
Ashwini Kumar Chopra was a journalist renowned for his courage, his fearless expression of his views, and his unwavering commitment to his principles. The editorials he wrote daily on the front page were not only a testament to his editorial skills but also a reflection of some deeply held values. His words were always spoken without hesitation. His columns for the editorial page not only established him as a respected journalist but also as a powerful opinion leader in the eyes of public. Many felt that his words were not just news, but a call to action, and sadly, no one could ignore his unique voice.

In 2014, Ashwini took a significant leap into the world of politics, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Karnal as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His victory in the elections was a testament to his impactful leadership and connection he had with the people, who elected him by a record margin in his constituency. Whether at work or outside, at his desk or in the field, his reporting had the same distinctive flavour that characterised this remarkable journalist.
Before venturing into journalism and politics, Ashwini had also made his mark in the world of sports. He was a talented leg-spinner and played 25 first-class matches for Punjab between 1975 and 1980, including dismissing Sunil Gavaskar in the 1975-76 Irani Cup. Although, he was a strong contender for the Indian cricket team in mid-1970s, but challenges curtailed his playing career; his love for cricket, however, endured forever.

This reminds us of the profound impact he made on the world around him during his lifetime. His legacy now lives on through his work at Punjab Kesari, his politics, and the lives he touched through sports. Ashwini Kumar Chopra may no longer be with us, but his spirit, his words, and his influence will continue to inspire generations to come.
As we reflect on his remarkable journey, we feel a deep sense of sorrow at his passing, but also immense gratitude for having known such a man of character, vision, and integrity. Rest in peace, Ashwini Kumar Chopra. You will be deeply missed, whereas your legacy will endure forever.
Remembering Ashwini Kumar Chopra today is not only a reflection on his illustrious career but also a reminder of the personal qualities that made him such a remarkable human being. A great courageous man who faced adversity with resilience and tackled every challenge with the mindset of a warrior, Ashwini dedicated himself to his work, his family, and his country, and was a source of strength for many.
