Jitiya Vrat 2025: Jitiya Vrat Katha

As per the legend, Jimutavahana, the prince of the Gandharvas, was renowned for his generosity and bravery. After his father appointed him as king and retreated to the forest for penance, Jimutavahana, disinterested in ruling, entrusted the kingdom to his brothers and joined his father in the forest. There, he encountered Princess Malayavati, and they fell in love and married. One day, while wandering in the forest, he came across a woman in tears. Upon inquiring, she revealed that she belonged to the Naga dynasty and had only one son, Shankhchud. The serpents had agreed to provide one snake daily to the bird king Garuda as food. The woman, weeping, explained that today her son was to be offered to Garuda, leaving her childless.

Jimutvahana was deeply moved by the woman's distress. He promised her that he would safeguard her son from Garuda. Jimutvahana took the red cloth from Shankachud and wrapped himself in it, then lay down on the sacrificial stone, the designated spot for the offering. At the scheduled time, Garuda arrived and seized Jimutvahana, who was wrapped in the red cloth, with his claws. Later, Garuda perched on a peak and attacked Jimutvahana with his beak, consuming a piece of his flesh, causing Jimutvahana to moan in pain. Surprised by the groaning, which was unprecedented, Garuda inquired about Jimutvahana's identity.

Jimutvahana revealed that he had offered his life to save a woman's son. Impressed by Jimutvahana's bravery and selflessness, Garuda regretted his actions and vowed never to eat a snake again. Consequently, the tradition of worshipping Jimutvahana for the well-being and prosperity of children began, known as Jitiya Vrat. It is believed that Jitiya Vrat is incomplete without this tale, making its recitation essential.
