What to do on Raksha Bandhan?

1. Maintain Cleanliness and Purity

Begin the day with a bath and wear fresh, clean clothes. It is believed that cleanliness strengthens love and peace in the sibling relationship.

2. Decorate the Puja Thali

Before tying the Rakhi, prepare a beautifully decorated plate containing a lit lamp (diya), sweets, rice, roli, and the Rakhi.

3. Tie the Rakhi with the Right Rituals

Sisters should face the right direction and tie three knots on their brother’s wrist, symbolizing love, care, and protection.

4. Cover the Brother’s Head
While tying the Rakhi, keep a handkerchief or cloth over the brother’s head as a mark of respect and blessing.

5. Seek and Give Blessings
After the Rakhi is tied, the brother should touch his sister’s feet for blessings and present her with a gift as a token of affection.

What to Avoid on Raksha Bandhan

1. Avoid Bhadra Kaal for Rakhi Tying
Rakhi should not be tied during inauspicious hours (Bhadra Kaal), as it is believed to cause disharmony in relationships.

2. Never Tie Rakhi on the Left Hand
The Rakhi should always be tied on the brother’s right wrist, not the left.

3. Do Not Keep the Puja Thali in an Unclean Place
After the ritual, place the plate in a clean, sacred spot—not on the floor or in an impure area.

Brothers should not gift handkerchiefs, perfumes, or sharp objects to sisters on this day.

5. Use Whole Grains of Rice for Tilak
