Government bans 25 apps for Adult Content Distribution
ALT Balaji-Ullu Ban: Lately, there has been significant political debate surrounding pornographic content on social media. In response, the government has taken action against apps distributing such material. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has opted to prohibit 25 apps and websites that display pornographic and adult content within the nation. The ministry has released a notification to Internet Service Providers (ISPs), instructing them to restrict public access to these platforms.
IT Ministry took action
There were ongoing grievances about adult content being presented as erotic web series without any regulation on these platforms. In response to these grievances, the IT Ministry has acted under the IT Act 2000 and the Digital Media Ethics Code, 2021. The government has stated that Internet Service Providers, as intermediaries, have a legal duty to block access to illegal and objectionable content.
Banned Apps
The apps and websites that have been banned include Alt Balaji, Ullu, Big Shots, Desiflix, Boomex, Gulaab, Navarasa Lite. Apart from this, other platforms like Kangan App, Bull App, Jalwa App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Soul Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mozflix and Triflix are also included in this list.
The aim is to protect the youth from wrong influences
Government sources indicate that these applications were encouraging indecency without any oversight or regulation of their content. The government's objective with this measure is to sanitize digital media in the nation and shield young people from negative influences. This move is seen as a significant effort to uphold ethical standards in the digital realm.
