Notification for Population Census 2025 issued, to be conducted in two phases
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the Population Census 2027, set to be conducted in two phases. The census will start on March 1, 2027, for most states, while October 1, 2026, is the reference date for Ladakh and snowbound regions. Digital methods and caste data will be utilized for a comprehensive count.
The MHA on Monday issued a notification regarding the conduction of Population Census in 2027. As per the government, the Census will take place in two phases. The reference date for Population Census - 2027 was also shared in the notification.
As per the notification, the Census for all states and Union territories (except Ladakh and snowbound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) will be conducted on March 1, 2027, while October 1, 2026 is the reference date for remaining states and UTs.
The census will utilize digital techniques, incorporate caste information, and be completed by March 2027.
The home ministry's notification read, "The reference date for the said census shall be 00.00 hours [12 am] of the 1st day of March, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
It added, “In respect of the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date shall be 00:00 hours of the 1st day of October, 2026.”
