What is a wetland?
Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil or is present seasonally or throughout the year. These ecosystems are important for maintaining biodiversity, reducing flooding, and filtering out pollutants. They serve as habitats for many species of plants and animals – especially birds, fish and amphibians – and are vital to the health of the planet.
What is a Ramsar site?
The Ramsar site is a wetland designated as of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The Convention aims to ensure the conservation and wise use of wetlands so as to maintain their ecological character and benefits for present and future generations. Ramsar-designated sites are globally recognized for their environmental, economic and cultural value.
