200-Tonne Steel Span Installed on Delhi-Meerut Corridor

Installation of steel span on Barapullah flyover completed

Summary

Under the Delhi-Meerut corridor, NCRTC has successfully installed a 200-tonne steel span on the Barapullah flyover. This will play an important role in connecting the viaduct of the span corridor. The challenging task was completed at night with the help of Delhi Administration and Traffic Police. This construction will enhance the connectivity of the NaMo Bharat Corridor.

Another milestone has been achieved in the direction of connecting Sarai Kale Khan station to Jangpura Stabling Yard under the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has successfully completed the construction and installation of a 200-tonne steel span on the Barapullah flyover. This span will play an important role in connecting the viaduct of the corridor smoothly. This particular steel span is made up of four large steel girders, all of which are 40-40 meters in length and weighing 50-50 tonnes. The challenging task was completed in two phases during the night by the NCRTC team in collaboration with Delhi Administration, Public Works Department and Traffic Police. The location was technically quite complex as there is a drain flowing on the ground below and the Barapullah flyover on the other. The NaMo Bharat Corridor is supposed to cross these two structures and proceed over them, for which this particular steel span was constructed. The girders were lifted from the ground and placed first on the flyover and then carefully installed on the designated pillars with the help of cranes parked on either side of the flyover.

During the installation process, power supply to the 220 KV high tension line passing through the area was alternated for some time in collaboration with Delhi Transco Limited due to safety reasons. The complex task was successfully completed following all precautions and safety standards. The NCRTC usually builds pillars at intervals of 34 metres in viaduct construction, but where existing structures have to be crossed, special spans are resorted to. Parts of these special spans are first manufactured in factories and then assembled there by bringing them to the site through trailers at night time.

The Jangpura Stabling Yard being built near Sarai Kale Khan station will play an important role in the operation of NaMo Bharat trains. Currently, trains are operational at 11 stations on the 55-km stretch from New Ashok Nagar in Delhi to Meerut South in Uttar Pradesh. NCRTC aims to open the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor to the general public by 2025. The 4.5-km-long section from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar will be operationalised in the next phase, where trial runs are underway from April 13. This entire section will further strengthen the connectivity and efficiency of the corridor.
