Indian Army deploys Russian Igla S Missiles on border

Emergency procurement strengthens Indian Army's air security

Summary

The Indian Army has received Igla S missiles from Russia, which are being deployed along the border. These missiles are part of the air defence system and are capable of protecting against enemy aircraft, helicopters and drones. The deal was done under the emergency procurement powers of the government, which will further strengthen the air security of the army.

In response to rising tensions with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror incident, the Indian Army has strengthened its military forces. They have procured Russian-manufactured Igla S air defense missiles, which are components of a short-range air defense system, improving the Army's capability to address aerial threats. This purchase was conducted under the government's emergency procurement authority. The missiles, acquired for around Rs 260 crore, are being stationed at advanced locations along the border to protect against adversary fighter jets, helicopters, and drones.

The Army acquired these missiles several weeks back and is now positioning them along the western borders due to the threat posed by Pakistan. Additionally, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has opted to purchase similar infrared-based Vashorades missiles.

In recent years, both the Army and the IAF have been bolstering their weaponry through urgent and expedited acquisition processes. Besides deploying the new Igla S missiles, the Army has initiated a tender for acquiring 48 new launchers and 90 more missiles. Additionally, the Army is now considering the purchase of the laser beam-riding wearade system in the near future.
