Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday greeted the people of Maharashtra on the occasion of Maharashtra Statehood Day. "Whenever the name of Maharashtra is mentioned, the image of its glorious heritage and courageous people emerges in the mind. The Prime Minister said that Maharashtra is not only playing a pivotal role in India's progress, but is deeply attached to its cultural roots. He conveyed his best wishes for the continued development of the state. At the same time, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to the martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement at Hutatma Chowk. He said that Maharashtra, which was moving forward under the guidance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, is today moving towards becoming a one trillion dollar economy. Flag hoisting and wreath-laying ceremonies were held in various parts of the state to mark the occasion.

 PM Modi lauds Maharashtra's contribution

On Maharashtra Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the contribution of the state to its progress, saying it is a strong pillar of the country's progress. Maharashtra's historical heritage, valour and cultural values have always inspired India, he said. PM Modi wished the people of the state to continue moving forward on the path of development.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis pays tribute to martyrs

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement at Hutatma Chowk in Mumbai. He described Maharashtra as the most progressive state in India and said it was a state which followed the ideals of Shivaji Maharaj and Ambedkar. Fadnavis also announced that in the next 100 days, a new initiative will be taken for the development of the state, the outline of which will be shared soon.

Flag hoisting ceremonies were held across the state to mark Maharashtra Day. In Pune, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar unfurled the national flag at the police headquarters, while in Mumbai, Governor Ramesh Bais paid homage by unfurling the flag. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hoisted the national flag at the Saket ground in Thane and remembered the martyrs of the movement.

Historical Background of Samyukta Maharashtra Movement

The Samyukta Maharashtra Parishad was established on 1 November 1955 in Pune under the leadership of Keshavrao Jedhe. The aim was to demand a separate Marathi-speaking state, with Mumbai as the capital. This movement later turned into the Samyukta Maharashtra Committee and after many years of struggle, the state of Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960. This movement became a symbol of the fight for Marathi identity and self-respect.
