The Modi government at the Center has taken a big step to give a new twist to the connectivity of Northeast India. The Modi government of India has given the green signal to a major project. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a four-lane greenfield access controlled high-speed corridor from Shillong (Meghalaya) to Silchar (Assam). The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹ 22,864 crore. It will be developed in hybrid annuity mode. The total length of the project will be 166.80 km.

Some parts in Meghalaya and some in Assam

The road project will be constructed on NH-06 from Mawlingkhung (near Shillong, Meghalaya) to Panchgram (near Silchar, Assam). The high-speed corridor will cover 144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam. This high-speed corridor will not only provide better road connectivity to the passengers going from Guwahati to Silchar but will also reduce the travel time considerably. This high-speed corridor will improve the quality of service between Guwahati and Silchar and will greatly ease and speed up connectivity to the mainland of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the Barak Valley region of Assam. This will also improve logistics services.

North East tourism will get a boost

The construction of this corridor will improve connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya as well as boost industrial development. This will give a boost to industrial development, especially in the cement and coal-producing areas of Meghalaya. This road will pass through many tourist places. This will facilitate tourists visiting Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar. After the road is built, people will be very comfortable to come here. This will give a boost to North East tourism.

Road will pass through these places:

The project will pass through Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya and Cachar district in Assam. This will decongest NH-06 and provide better connectivity to cities like Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Framer, Khaliriyat, Ratchasera, Umkiang and Kalain through NH-27, NH-106, NH-206 and NH-37.

Economic development of states

At the same time, this decision of the Modi government at the Center is being linked to the economic development of the states. It is being told that this project will lead to the economic development of the states. This will be an important step towards road development. This will also give a new twist to the vision of self-reliant India. The project will strengthen inter-city connectivity between major cities and reduce traffic pressure.
