High Alert: Security tightened in National Capital following Pahalgam Attack
Following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Amritsar have been placed on high alert. Security measures have been intensified, particularly in tourist areas and at border checkpoints. The attack killed 26 people, mostly tourists, prompting strong reactions from political leaders and heightened vigilance across the nation.
In response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Amritsar have been placed on high alert today. On Tuesday afternoon, a well-known meadow near Pahalgam town was the site of an attack that killed 28 people, mostly tourists, and injured 12 others. This marks the deadliest incident in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
The assault occurred in the afternoon at Baisaran valley, an off-road meadow just over 6 km from Pahalgam, which was crowded with tourists. Armed individuals emerged and began shooting randomly at the visitors.
As reported by officials, the police have heightened security measures across the city, particularly in tourist spots and at border crossings, verifying that inspections and surveillance have been intensified. Additionally, traffic flow has been controlled in critical areas.
The alert aligns with the current visit of US Vice President J D Vance, as security measures have already been heightened in Delhi and other cities.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her anguish over a terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, asserting the “cowardly” act will not go unanswered.
“Deeply anguished to learn about the terrorist attacks on tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam. My thoughts are with those who lost their close ones and prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. These cowardly, barbaric attacks will not go unanswered,” Gupta said in a post on X.
According to sources, the SWAT commandos of the Delhi Police Special Cell have been instructed to remain on high alert to prevent any terrorist activities or hostage situations in the Capital.
Additionally, officers mentioned that police stations situated at Delhi's borders have been directed to enhance surveillance in their respective areas.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the toll was still being ascertained and described the attack as "much larger than anything we've seen directed at civilians in recent years".
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and decided to return to New Delhi on Tuesday night, as the terror attack sent shockwaves in the country and drew widespread condemnation and outrage. He was originally scheduled to return to India on Wednesday night.
