Delhi MCD Election: BJP nominates Raja Iqbal Singh for Mayor
The MCD mayoral election is to be held in Delhi on April 25 and this time the contest seems to be one-sided. The BJP has announced its mayoral and deputy mayor candidates. The party has nominated Raja Iqbal Singh as its mayoral candidate and Jai Bhagwan Yadav as its deputy mayor. The special thing is that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided not to participate in the mayor election this time. In such a situation, the path has become even easier for the BJP. To become the mayor, a total of 132 votes are needed, and the BJP has the strength of 135 votes. It includes councillors, MLAs and MPs. In such a situation, Raja Iqbal Singh is almost certain to become the mayor.
Who is Raja Iqbal Singh?
Raja Iqbal Singh is a BJP councillor from Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar and belongs to the Sikh community. He is currently the Leader of Opposition in the MCD. He was earlier the mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Apart from this, he has also been the chairman of the ward committee in the Civil Lines zone. This is his second term as a councillor. Talking about education, he has studied B.Sc. from Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi University and LLB degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.
Jai Bhagwan Yadav will be the deputy mayor candidate.
The BJP has nominated Jai Bhagwan Yadav for the post of Deputy Mayor. He is a councillor from Begumpur ward of Narela zone and is currently the deputy leader of the opposition in the MCD. The party has expressed hope that his team will provide better governance in the MCD.
Why did AAP leave the field?
AAP currently has 119 votes, which is short of the majority. The BJP has 135 votes. BJP state president Virendra Sachdeva said that AAP had a pre-awareness of its defeat, so they withdrew from the contest.
