PWD Minister outlines plan to phase out water tankers in Delhi

Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma on Sunday said that the state government is planning to eventually get rid of the tanker system for water distribution in several areas of the national capital. He said that the government's long-term plan is to provide water directly from the tap. "Our long-term plan is to ensure that every household in Delhi gets piped water directly so that the tanker system can be gradually dismantled... This is our government's transparency and good governance model. He said earlier there was no management system for water tankers and pointed out that people of Delhi can now track the location of tankers through mobile applications.

"There was no management system earlier... If a tanker reaches the given location, it will be fully monitored through the app. The people of Delhi can download that app and see which tanker is going to which area. "Sensors will be installed in tankers to detect whether the tanker has unloaded or how much water it has offloaded after reaching its designated area," Verma said. "

Meanwhile, speaking on the tanker mafia, Delhi minister Kapil Mishra said, "The tanker mafia will be eliminated from the root, if there is a tanker mafia, then they should leave Delhi." "This government has resolved to solve the water problem and what we did in 10 years, we have done in 10 weeks. I thank the CM and the concerned minister for this. There is no scope for corruption by mafia. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 1,111 water tanks for the Jal Board and said people would be able to monitor the location of GPS-enabled tankers with the help of the tanker application.

Hitting out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, Gupta said there were "leaks" in the entire system in the name of tanker mafia. He said that earlier the water tanks were not known. He, however, added that the routes taken by the tankers can be monitored as they have GPS installed.
