The registration of electric vehicles in India grew by 17% in FY 2025, reaching 1.68 million units. Two-wheeler EV sales saw a 21% rise, totaling 11.5 lakh units. SIAM credits this growth to enhanced rural demand, rising consumer confidence, and supportive government policies.
According to the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the registration of EV vehicles across the country is steadily increasing. Compared to FY 2024, FY 2025 has registered a growth of 17 percent. It was 1.68 million units in FY 2023-24. SIAM reported that the registration of EV two-wheelers has increased by 21 percent compared to the previous year and has reached 11.5 lakh units. SIAM stated that passenger vehicles (PV) recorded their highest-ever sales of 4.3 million units in FY 2024-25, a growth of 2 per cent over FY 2023-24.
Strong demand from customers
The Indian automobile industry's domestic sales grew by 7.3 per cent and exports saw a strong jump of 19.2 per cent. SIAM attributed this performance to strong customer demand, government support, investment in infrastructure and increased focus on sustainable mobility. Positive economic policies and healthy market sentiment also helped sustain growth.
Scooter segment at the forefront
Two-wheeler sales made a solid recovery, with sales of 19.6 million units in FY 2024-25, showing a growth of 9.1 percent. Improved rural demand and rising consumer confidence played a key role in this growth. The scooter segment led the way in rural and semi-urban areas thanks to the launch of new models with better connectivity and better features.
Export of Two-Wheelers
Electric vehicles (EVs) also gained momentum, with their share crossing 6 per cent of total two-wheeler sales during the year. Two-wheeler exports grew by 21.4 per cent to reach 4.2 million units. This was due to new product launches and growing demand in Africa and Latin America.
