Key decisions made to enhance Indian boxing prospects
The World Boxing-led Interim Committee, tasked with bringing Indian boxing back on track, held its first meeting on Monday. According to a release from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), the committee took important decisions aimed at reviving the infrastructure at the grassroots level and enhancing India's medal prospects in the upcoming international boxing competitions. On Monday, the committee met virtually and took concrete decisions that were impacting the functioning of Indian boxing, which was at a standstill since the beginning of this year.
The committee made decisions to immediately revive the domestic circuit as well as to reintroduce the elite boxing system. It was also decided that the selection of coaches and support staff for the Elite Men and Women National Coaching Camps will be processed with immediate effect. World Boxing had on April 7 formed an interim committee, headed by Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh, to run the day-to-day affairs of the federation and address all issues hampering the growth of boxing.
Other key decisions taken in the meeting included effective participation of budding boxers from India in the Under-15 and Under-17 Asian Championships to be held in Amman, Jordan from 17 April 2025, ensuring smooth conduct of the Youth Under-19 National Championships with maximum participation and disbursement of REC scholarship funds to athletes, which has been pending for the last few months.
The committee also decided to release REC grants for equipment support at the grassroots level to selected and approved academies to strengthen and promote boxing at new venues in the country.
