SC halts new FIRs against Udhaynidhi Stalin on Sanatan Dharma comments
The Supreme Court of India has given legal relief to the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in its recent order that no new FIR can be filed against him on his Sanatan Dharma Remarks without the permission of the court. On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India declared that no new cases can be filed against Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister, Udhaynidhi Stalin, regarding his remarks on Sanatan Dharma, without the Court's approval. The court has come to the order during the hearing of a petition filed by Stalin that multiple cases have already been registered against him in various states like UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Jammu on his controversial statement.
Stalin’s Advocate AM Singhvi reminds the court about his earlier urge made to club all the FIRs together for the trial in the Karnataka High Court if it is not possible in Tamil Nadu. The bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar further issued notices to the complainers who filed new FIRs and ordered halt on registration of new FIRs. The bench also ordered the protection of Udhaynidhi from the arrest in these new cases. The court has scheduled the next hearing on 28th April.
The Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK representative issued a statement in September 2023 against ‘Sanatan Dharma’ comparing it with the diseases like ‘Dengue’ and ‘Malaria’ and should be destroyed. After the statement gained controversy, Udhaynidhi defended that he was criticising the Caste based discrimination in the society and Social Injustice.
