Rekha Gupta (50), the MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was selected during a BJP legislature party meeting held at the state party office on Pant Marg this evening, overseen by two central observers – former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and BJP National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankhar.
Gupta, a professional advocate, is set to take the oath at a grand swearing-in ceremony at the city's renowned Ramlila Maidan at noon today. Lt Governor Saxena will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chief Minister, in the presence of senior BJP leaders and allied party members on the stage. The ceremony will notably attract a crowd of car drivers, auto drivers, and slum-dwellers.
Rakha Gupta was born on July 19, 1974, in Nandgarh village, Jind district, Haryana. Her father worked as a bank officer. In 1976, when Gupta was only two years old, the family relocated to Delhi. She was raised and educated in the capital, where her solid academic background paved the way for her future in politics.
Gupta started her political journey during her time as a student. While attending Delhi University, she became a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organization of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Her active participation in student politics resulted in her election as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) for the 1996-1997 term. Additionally, she served as the Secretary of Dyal Singh College and was heavily involved in student activism, which furthered her transition into public life.
Rekha Gupta embarked on her political journey with the BJP in the early 2000s. She became a part of the party's youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), serving as the secretary for the Delhi unit. Gupta's leadership qualities were soon acknowledged, leading to her appointment as the National Secretary of BJYM from 2004 to 2006. Her exceptional organisational skills and commitment to the party's goals elevated her stature within the BJP.
In 2007, Gupta was elected as a councillor in the MCD elections for the North Pitampura constituency. She served as the President of the Women's Welfare and Child Development Committee in MCD from 2007 to 2009. Additionally, she occupied several prominent roles, such as General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Women's Wing and National Executive Member of the party.
