BJP leadership meets at Home Minister's residence after victory
A meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership is underway at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's residence. BJP national president and Union Minister JP Nadda and many other leaders are present in this meeting. The meeting comes after the party's historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where it snatched power from the Aam Aadmi Party by winning 48 out of 70 seats in the elections. The party has not announced any chief ministerial candidate for Delhi so far. Speaking on the chief ministerial candidate on Saturday, BJP candidate from the New Delhi Assembly seat, Parvesh Verma, said that the party's decision on the CM's face will be acceptable to all.
"In our party, the legislature party decides (the CM's face) and then the party leadership approves it. Therefore, the party's decision will be acceptable to all," he said. The BJP defeated prominent AAP leaders, including supremo Arvind Kejriwal from New Delhi, Manish Sisodia from Jangpura, Saurabh Bhardwaj from Greater Kailash, Satyendar Jain from Shakur Basti.
Atishi was the only consolation winner for AAP as she defeated BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,500 votes. Meanwhile, Atishi resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi on Sunday following her party's defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections. After this, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has dissolved the 7th Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi from today.
The dissolution of the Assembly paves the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government in the national capital. The decision comes months after the BJP-led alliance swept the Maharashtra polls and the party swept to victory in Haryana, the BJP's dominance in national politics.
The Congress, which was hoping to make a comeback in the national capital, again failed to win any seat. The party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years since 1998, registered a hat-trick zero tally in the assembly elections. The counting of votes began on Saturday morning, while voting took place on February 5.
