Saira Banu Meets CM Dhami, Hails UCC for Women's Equal Rights
Saira Banu, an advocate of triple talaq, met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the Chief Minister's residence and expressed gratitude for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Expressing gratitude to CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Shayara Bano said that with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, women will get equal rights in the state. With the implementation of UCC, there is an atmosphere of happiness among the women of the state. The UCC will establish equality in the society, which will help the country and the state to move forward. Shayara Bano played an important role as a decisive personality in her legal fight against triple talaq and polygamy.
Triple Talaq, Ban on Polygamy
Saira Banu was granted triple 'talaq' by her husband soon after she filed a petition in the Supreme Court to ban triple talaq, polygamy, and nikah halala in February 2016. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, criminalizes instant triple talaq among Muslims and provides for a three-year jail term for the husband.
UCC a Milestone
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on January 27 announced the official implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, which he described as a historic moment for Uttarakhand and the nation. To commemorate this milestone, Chief Minister Dhami said that January 27 will be celebrated as "UCC Day" every year, reflecting its importance in India's post-independence history. According to the state government, this act applies to the entire territory of the state of Uttarakhand and is also applicable to the residents of the state living outside Uttarakhand.
