Centenary Celebrations: Indian railways' electrification turns 100
Indian Railways will celebrate the 100th anniversary of electrification on February 3, highlighting the first steps taken by Indian Railways towards a green rail system. Central Public Relations Officer, Swapnil Neela said that the first electric train in India ran from platform 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kurla in Mumbai on February 3, 1925. The railways started electrification on April 16, 1853, exactly 72 years after the first Indian train started.
Complete 100% electrification
CPRO Swapnil Neela said that apart from celebrating centenary since the beginning of electrification, Central Railway has also completed 100 per cent electrification. In this particular period, Central Railway has also completed its 100% electrification, and for this we are initiating the celebrations starting from 3rd February. Several events have been planned to celebrate the centenary, including several seminars and 3D shows.
Will show the history and heritage of railways
The planned events include a number of activities planned starting with the morning run. This will be followed by a formal commemoration and technical and other seminars at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on the same day. We will continue to organise various events, including launches, three shows. The Central Railway has also planned various sessions to showcase the history and heritage of railways with school children.
