Prime Minister Modi to Open Strategic Z-MORH Tunnel in J&K
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Z-MORH tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir today. This significant tunnel, which spans around 6.5 kilometers, is located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Situated at an elevation of 8,650 feet above sea level, this tunnel holds significant importance for strategic purposes, road connectivity, and development. The building of this tunnel will ensure year-round road connectivity in the Ladakh area.
Stringent security measures have been implemented prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir, due to recent terrorist activities and the region's proximity to the Line of Control with Pakistan.
To ensure security, the army has intensified patrolling and established temporary posts. Vehicles are being inspected, and aerial surveillance is being conducted using drones.
The construction of the Z-MORH tunnel began in 2015 and was completed in 2025. The 6.5KM tunnel was built at an approximate cost of Rs 2400 crore.
A two-lane roadway has been constructed within this tunnel. The Z-MORH tunnel will shorten the distance between Gagnir and Sonamarg from 49KM to 43KM.
