According to the press release from the Tamil Nadu government's DIPR, human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not a newly discovered virus; it has been circulating since it was first identified in 2001.

HMPV infection resolves on its own and is managed with symptomatic care, such as sufficient hydration and rest. The treatment for HMPV is focused on relieving symptoms and providing support.

At present, two instances of human metapneumovirus have been identified, one in Chennai and another in Salem. Both patients are in stable condition and are under observation.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda gave the assurance

The Indian Government has assured that the HMPV virus is stable and not a reason for worry. Preventive measures for HMPV are similar to those for other respiratory infections, such as covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, washing hands, and wearing masks in crowded areas.

The public is reassured that HMPV is generally self-limiting and manageable. There is no need to panic.

Medical professionals have explained that HMPV is not a recently discovered virus. It was initially detected in 2001. HMPV is airborne and can infect individuals of any age.

The virus tends to spread more during the winter and early spring months. The ICMR and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are monitoring the situation and ensuring the country's readiness to handle any new health challenges.
