Opposition Protests Halt Parliament Winter Session Till December 2

Opposition Sloganeering Disrupts Parliament Winter Session
Published on

On Friday, Parliament was adjourned until December 2 (Monday) following continuous sloganeering by opposition MPs in both Houses for the fourth day in a row. The winter session of Parliament has been disrupted from the start due to opposition protests over the Adani issue and violence in Manipur and Sambhal. Initially, the Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned, with Chairman and Deputy Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar stating that the action is not 'people-centric'.

"This is unacceptable," stated the Rajya Sabha Chairman. He expressed concern that the disruptions in Parliament are making us a subject of ridicule and are frowned upon by the public. He warned that this sets a terrible example and that our work is not focused on the people. He added that we are heading towards irrelevance and that Rule 267 is being misused as a tool for disruption.

The Chairman expressed profound sorrow and regret over the disruption of the House's usual business. Opposition members persisted in raising slogans in Parliament, demanding discussions on the Adani issue, Sambhal violence, and the situation in Manipur. Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the central government, questioning why it is not opposing the adjournment. 'Another day's proceedings in Parliament were thwarted due to the Modani issue. Both Houses were adjourned after a few minutes today. The big mystery is why the government is not opposing the adjournment,' he said.

Conversely, the government is encouraging the aggression of Indian parties towards Modini, particularly concerning the law and order in Manipur, Sambhal, and Delhi. It's evident that it has much to defend and apologize for," Ramesh posted on X. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi remarked that the government should specify the issues it intends to address and the timing. "Did the government mention there would be discussions on Adani, Manipur, Sambhal, China, and foreign policy? There has been no communication from the Government. It has neither clarified the topics nor the schedule.

Gogoi stated, "Once the government clarifies the subject and the date, we will be able to proceed with the House." However, he expressed concern over a new sense of arrogance in the government. Congress MP Kumari Selja criticized the government for its lack of interest in running the House, saying, "They do not want a discussion. We want to have one, but they neither listen to the Opposition nor take us into confidence. We want the House to function." She also pointed out that they had been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Adani issue, but the government was unwilling to agree. Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram expressed hope that the government would be magnanimous and allow the opposition to raise important issues. "The government should find a way for the opposition to express itself, while also presenting its own stance," he said.
