Dev Deepawali 2024: Celebrations and Prayers Across the Country
Dev Deepawali 2024: On Friday, on Dev Deepawali, devotees worshiped and took a dip in various rivers across the country. Devotees offered prayers at the Shiva Hanuman Temple in Himayat Nagar, Hyderabad.
Today is Dev Deepawali
Devotees thronged the Ganga river in Varanasi to take holy dip on the occasion of Dev Deepawali. In Jabalpur, people offered prayers early in the morning on Friday and took a holy dip in the Narmada river. The full moon of the eighth lunar month is called Kartik or Kartik Purnima. The festival falls on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik and is celebrated fifteen days after Diwali.
Devotees offer Prayers
According to the Hindu calendar, the day of Purnima is called by many names throughout the country, including Purnima, Poonam, Pournami and Pournamasi. In Vaishnavism, the month of Kartik is called Damodar month. One of the names of Lord Krishna is Damodar. Kartik Purnima is also celebrated as Dev Deepawali and marks the fifteenth lunar day of the Hindu month Kartik. The festival is associated with Prabodhini Ekadashi and marks the end of Chaturmas, the four-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to be asleep.
Cultural Pride and Unity Among People
In Odisha, water bodies across the state came alive as lakhs of devotees gathered to celebrate Kartik Purnima to mark the historic Boita Bandana ritual. Every year, on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, people in Odisha celebrate the traditional maritime and naval festival, 'Boita Bandana', also known as 'Danga Bhasa'. The festival commemorates Odisha's historical links with other maritime civilizations and promotes a sense of cultural pride and unity among the people.
