In Mauritius, voters went to the polls on Sunday to elect members of parliament in the nation’s 12th election since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1968.
The election was held to select representatives for 62 parliamentary seats from among 68 parties and five political alliances. On Monday, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth conceded defeat, acknowledging that his political alliance is likely facing a significant loss, according to Al Jazeera.
“L'Alliance Lepep is facing a significant defeat. I have done my best for the country and its people. Now, the population has chosen a different team. I wish the country well,” Jugnauth told reporters on Monday.
Seventy-seven-year-old Ramgoolam, son of former Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, served as Prime Minister from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014. On Sunday, Ramgoolam expressed confidence that his alliance would win, telling reporters, “We are moving toward a major victory tomorrow. The people are eagerly awaiting this liberation,” Al Jazeera reported.
India and Mauritius have close, longstanding relations rooted in shared history, demographics, and culture. Nearly 70% of Mauritius’s 1.2 million population is of Indian descent.
