ANI has filed the case against Wikipedia for which Delhi HC has also scolded Wikipedia. The central government has sent a notice to Wikipedia. Answer has been sought on several complaints of ‘bias and wrong information’ on it. According to the report of news agency PTI, the government has also asked Wikipedia isn’t considered a publisher rather than an intermediary.
In the letter issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, it has also been said that only a limited group of people have editorial control over Wikipedia pages. Wikipedia describes itself as a free online encyclopedia. Where people can create and publish pages on persons, issues and different topics as per their wish.
Generally, it is considered a popular online source for gathering information. But now it seems to be getting entangled in legal cases on charges of giving defamatory and wrong information. The government's recent notice has come during an ongoing case in the Delhi High Court. This case has been registered by news agency ANI. In which it has sought information about who has edited ANI's Wikipedia page and called it a 'propaganda tool'.
On the hearing of this case, Bar and Bench quoted Justice Subramaniam Prasad of Delhi High Court and wrote, the high court also said it was "concerning" that Wikipedia claims to be an encyclopedia, adding that it does not verify or endorse the information.
In July, the Wikimedia Foundation issued a statement on the case filed by ANI, NDTV reported. He described himself as a "technology host" and said that he does not add or edit content published on Wikipedia. ANI has claimed a compensation of Rs 2 crore on Wikipedia. In this, instructions have also been sought to remove all objectionable edits and to stop publication of such information in future.
