SC firecracker ban: The Supreme Court has permitted the sale and burning of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR ahead of Diwali with several strict conditions. A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Vinod Chandran delivered the order. The court stated that green firecrackers cause less environmental damage than traditional firecrackers, and therefore their limited and controlled use can be permitted.

CJI BR Gavai said the court has considered the suggestions of the Solicitor General and the amicus curiae on the issue. He said, “We understand that the industry also has concerns. The use of traditional firecrackers is increasing, which further increases pollution. Therefore, we have to adopt a balanced approach.”

It is to be noted that 14 of Haryana’s 22 districts fall in the NCR region. He said that when firecrackers were banned, there was no significant improvement in air quality, except during the Covid period. However, the introduction of green firecrackers in the last six years has significantly reduced pollution levels.
