Mexico has announced that it will impose tariffs on goods imported from India and other countries starting next year, 2026. Consequently, Mexico will levy up to 50% tariffs on 1,400 imported goods from next year. The question is why Mexico has taken this step? Some reports suggest that Mexico has taken this decision to increase tariffs to promote its local industries. Mexico has also taken this step to appease the United States.
Mexico 50% Tariff Attack: How is the trade relationship between India and Mexico?
India and Mexico have strong and growing trade relations. In 2024, the total trade between the two countries was about US$11.7 billion. India exported around US$8.9 billion worth of goods to Mexico and imported about US$2.8 billion from Mexico. India mainly sells automobiles, medicines, engineering goods, and chemical products to Mexico, while Mexico mostly exports crude oil and some machinery to India.
Recently, both countries signed an MoU to increase trade, which is expected to boost cooperation and investment in sectors like agriculture, automobiles, and medical equipment. Overall, India–Mexico trade is strong and likely to grow even more. However, Mexico has now imposed a 50% tariff on 1,400 Indian products, which may affect this growing relationship.
