For dryness or discomfort, lubricating eye drops are safer than rubbing

Practice of Regularly Rubbing Your Eyes is Detrimental

Many of us have a habit of rubbing our eyes frequently. Although it may seem harmless, experts like physical therapist Dr. Aqib Jamal do not recommend it. According to him, it is better to rub lightly around the eyes - under or under the eyebrows - under the eyebrows. But why? Dr Manendra, Consultant and HOD Critical Care Department, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, said that rubbing the eyes may seem harmless, but it can lead to several problems.

Professional advice From Dr. Manendra

Dr. Manendra said, "Excessive rubbing can damage the delicate tissues, which can worsen conditions like corneal abrasion or keratoconus, in which the cornea becomes thin and deformed. This habit can also break down small blood vessels, causing redness or irritation. The expert said that when we rub our eyes, especially with dirty hands, we run the risk of coming in contact with bacteria and dirt, which can lead to infections such as conjunctivitis. "The right way to touch your eyes is to make sure your hands are clean. Avoid rubbing them directly. If they feel itchy or burning, use a clean, cold compress to soothe them," says Dr. Manendra.

Lubricating Eye Drops are Safer than Rubbing

For dryness or discomfort, lubricating eye drops are safer than rubbing, explains Dr. Manendra. "Side massage of the eyes is not generally recommended, as excessive pressure can damage the structure of the eyes. Always be gentle with the area around the eyes, and if irritation persists, consult an eye specialist," says Dr. Manendra.
