A big Revelation About the Mental Health of the Elderly
According to the study, the world's population is increasing rapidly. Let us tell you that researchers from the University of Canberra (UC) and the University of South Australia (Unisa) have studied the benefits of playing in playgrounds specially designed for children and adults. Young children and older people can participate in creative and fun activities when they engage in intergenerational play, including sports, storytelling, and playground equipment. By the year 2050, the number of adults over the age of 60 worldwide is expected to double and the number of adults over the age of 80 is expected to triple.
Playing with grandchildren will keep the mental health of the elderly better
There is a social divide between young and older people, which makes meaningful interactions outside of home and school difficult, said Fenke Peng, associate professor and deputy director of the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments at the University of South Australia. In older adults, this age-based separation leads to feelings of social disconnection and isolation, which can later lead to depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and cognitive decline, Peng said. Creating a playground for children as well as their parents and grandparents will encourage intergenerational play and improve mental health outcomes.

In play space co-design workshops conducted by the researchers, participants aged 65 and older discussed the benefits of spending time with children and imagined what a shared space in their community might look like. In addition, participants discussed what else they would want in addition to their favourite playtime in an intergenerational playground? Designing space for inter generational play between children and adults is important to address mental health concerns and encourage interaction between generations.
This includes eliminating social discrimination and creating shared spaces that meet the needs of older adults, the study says.
