Today, the nation is celebrating its 77th Republic Day. India has given the concept of a republic to the entire world. The term “republic” has been mentioned forty times in the Rigveda, nine times in the Atharvaveda, and several times in other ancient texts. The meaning of a republic is the participation of the people in the governance system. On this very day, India adopted and implemented its Constitution.
There is no doubt that India today is on the path of progress and is moving towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy. India is making its mark in space, and in defense, it is moving towards self-reliance. Once the largest importer of defense equipment, India has now become an exporter. The country’s wealth is abundant, and India’s young workforce is proving its talent both at home and abroad.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has emerged as a strong nation. India will no longer bow to any superpower; its foreign policy is independent, and it is not a follower of any global power. India is roaring like a lion.
However, there are still many challenges in education, healthcare, the judiciary, and the legislative system. Corruption, bribery, and rising crime remain major social challenges. The judiciary frequently reprimands the legislature on issues like pollution, yet no effective solution has been implemented. Even a vast democracy like ours has its own set of problems. Casteism, communalism, and growing religious extremism continue to pose threats to the nation.
This Republic Day, India faces several major challenges. Global wars, geopolitical instability, shifting world order, and U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff wars have created a complex situation. The country faces the challenge of dealing with adverse economic conditions. The Russia-Ukraine war has divided both opponents and supporters. The U.S. is simultaneously demonstrating its power over Venezuela, Iran, and Greenland, disturbing the balance of power. Conventional rules of global diplomacy, international trade, and governance no longer apply.
On the positive side, domestic economic indicators are full of hope. The Modi government has successfully mitigated the impact of Trump’s tariffs. India is gaining access to new markets, though global instability is directly affecting the economy. This means that India must take revolutionary measures in the upcoming budget to face and overcome unexpected global economic challenges. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will need to focus on measures that promote employment generation, provide relief to industries from large to small, prioritize targeted social sector spending, and implement structural reforms. Overall industrial development must remain robust and inclusive, which requires bold, innovative steps.
India continues to sign free trade agreements with one country after another. This Republic Day, there is also a special diplomatic message. Instead of inviting a single head of state as the chief guest, India has invited two European leaders: Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Antonio Costa, President of the European Council. Inviting the top leadership of the European Union signals India’s intent to strengthen EU collaboration, free trade agreements, and strategic partnerships. India is now emphasizing multilateral strategies and partnerships on the global stage.
Political turmoil in neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal also poses challenges. Malicious intentions from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China are potential threats. As the nature of wars has changed, all three branches of the Indian armed forces are being prepared for future warfare. Therefore, this year’s Republic Day parade will showcase not only India’s diversity, culture, and progress but also its military strength. Witnessing the parade will instill pride, as India is writing a new chapter. On one hand, it will demonstrate power, culture, and new technology; on the other, debates continue between the judiciary, media, and the public about the direction of democracy.
India requires advanced technology on a large scale to face future border challenges. Today is also a day to reflect on what we have gained and lost over the years. Our banking system is strong, but concerns remain regarding the currency, employment, and exports. India’s growth projections are promising, but improvements are still needed in agriculture and industrial production. Special attention must be given to rural development.
Republic Day is a national festival dedicated to the dignity, excellence, and greatness of the nation. In comparison to many other countries where democratic roots are still shallow, India’s republic has remained strong. However, there are disruptive forces within the country that do not respect the Constitution or the law. Political opposition is acceptable, but maintaining national unity is everyone’s paramount duty.
The generation of nation-builders who fought the freedom struggle has long passed. Now the fourth generation has arrived, which must feel pride and honor in the glory of the republic. Generation Z has high expectations from India. They must fulfill their duties to build a prosperous and powerful nation that future generations can be proud of.
