Rising unemployment in India is driving many people to migrate abroad, particularly in search of lucrative jobs, better salaries, and skill development opportunities. This trend is also being seen among highly educated youth, as they struggle to find jobs commensurate with their qualifications in the country. Many educated youth struggle to find jobs that align with their education, leading them to seek better opportunities abroad.
Working abroad is often considered the next step after an international degree for several reasons. International experience, greater opportunities, a vast job market, foreign exchange earnings, and high salary packages are just a few of the reasons. Top foreign student destinations like the US, UK, and Canada all boast rapidly growing economies and offer students opportunities for professional and personal development. While the allure and benefits of the international job market are undeniable, students often overlook their home countries for career pursuits. Developing economies like India offer a thriving market, opportunities for exploration, and the potential for successful careers. We’re going to tell you about a village where people have more wealth than those in the city. This village is not only the richest village in India, but also in Asia. It’s located near a desert. We’re talking about Madhapar village in Gujarat, known as Asia’s richest village.
Residents of this village have deposited over ₹7,000 crore in 17 banks. Most of the families living in this village live abroad but prefer to deposit their money in the village banks. Madhapar village is primarily inhabited by members of the Patel community. Today, we’ll talk about the India that is driving the world. Wherever you go in the world (a major tech company in America, a research institute in Europe, a business conference in Africa, or anywhere else), one thing is almost certain: you’ll find an Indian there, commanding attention with their intelligence, hard work, and leadership. This demonstrates that India isn’t just in the news because of its population or culture; rather, Indians have become “game changers” across the globe.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) International Migration Outlook 2025 report states that Indian workers are at the center of global labor mobility. The world today is relying on India’s talent. Indians are no longer just laborers, but are strengthening the world economy as doctors, nurses, engineers, researchers, and IT professionals. The report also claims that in 2023, if the largest number of people from any one country will go to work in the developed countries of the world, then it will be India’s youth and professionals. Today, the head of the World Bank is an Indian. Ajay Banga, who is giving direction to the economy of the entire world. Apart from these, Indian women like Kamala Harris, Sunita Williams, Indra Nooyi have also created history in every field. You may have often heard names like Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, Arvind Krishna, and Shantanu Narayan, who are enhancing India’s prestige abroad, but beyond these, there are millions of Indians playing a vital role in the world’s progress. Migration is now not just for low-wage jobs, but also for skilled and semi-skilled professionals, and India is at the forefront. In 2023 alone, nearly 600,000 Indians went to work in OECD countries, an 8 percent increase from the previous year. Thus, Indians remained the largest source of foreign workers in these countries. This also shows that global migration is driven by skilled and semi-skilled professionals, led by India.
India is among the top three countries for doctors and nurses going abroad for jobs. Between 2021 and 2023, many migrant doctors and more than a third of migrant nurses in OECD countries came from Asia, with India contributing the most. Many young graduates, after studying abroad, are starting jobs there and earning a reputation in various sectors. Programs like the UK’s Health and Care Worker Visa and Ireland’s International Medical Graduate Training Initiative have made it easier for Indians to find jobs in the healthcare sector abroad. Indian tech workers are also working in many countries around the world. Indian tech workers are prominent in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and other European countries. Indians are at the forefront of the tech sector. Statistics show that the world needs skilled workers, and India is currently supplying them. Indian workers are working in the largest number of jobs in the Middle East, where they provide services ranging from construction to healthcare.
While it’s a good thing that Indians are leading the way in earning fame and money abroad, the flip side is why India’s talent is being used abroad and not in India. While Indians are strengthening the health sector abroad, the state of the health sector in India is no secret. In some places, there’s no doctor, in others, a single doctor oversees everything. Indian youth are becoming tech experts abroad, yet they’re struggling to find recognition in India. Do you think rapidly changing lifestyles, the desire for better salaries, and a demanding job, along with the lack of employment opportunities in India, could be a major reason why people are working abroad?
