It is a painful reality that our country and the world have endured countless acts of terrorism, leaving behind deep wounds and countless innocent lives lost. History reminds us again and again that people who stood by truth or performed their duties with integrity often paid with their lives. The recent car-bomb explosion at Delhi’s historic Red Fort, the most powerful symbol of our independence, which claimed 13 lives, is another heartbreaking chapter. Mere condemnation feels inadequate. This cowardly act was yet another attack on humanity itself. From what has been reported on television and social media, the intention behind this blast seems to have been to disturb the communal harmony of the Red Fort area, the very heart of Delhi. Thankfully, the terrorists failed in that aim.

This incident strikes an especially sensitive chord with me. Our Punjab Kesari founders—Shaheed Shiromani Lala Jagat Narayan Ji and Amar Shaheed Ramesh Chandra Ji—laid down their lives in 1981 and 1984 while standing firm on the path of duty and truth. Only those who have lost loved ones in such tragedies truly understand the depth of this pain. While investigative agencies are examining every possibility to track down the masterminds, several reasons point to why the Red Fort was chosen as the target. The area is home to the Gauri Temple, the Jain Temple, and the Sheeshganj Sahib Gurudwara—places that have long symbolized communal harmony. Thousands of devotees visit these shrines daily, adding to the cultural fabric of the region. Chandni Chowk, a major commercial hub, sees an enormous influx of traders and laborers every day who depend on this area for their livelihood. This attack was clearly meant to demoralize them. However, Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh have all assured the nation that the culprits will be caught and punished in a way that sets an example before the world.

There is also a deep historical connection between the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and our families—our women and children. These places are not just tourist spots; they hold stories that shaped our freedom struggle. The museums narrating the saga of India’s independence and the libraries preserving centuries of knowledge draw people of all ages.

The terrorists’ goal was likely to frighten people—shoppers, workers, and those simply trying to earn their daily bread. That is why they resorted to a car bomb. Fortunately, the attempt to shatter peace was uncovered quickly. While the ongoing investigation continues, I believe that security must be strengthened at crowded historical locations, especially in parking areas. Although parking facilities are mostly managed by private contractors, establishing security pickets and increasing surveillance inside these zones would make it easier to detect suspicious activity.

It is reassuring that tight security during recent festivals prevented terrorists from striking then, but it is equally tragic that they launched their attack the moment they found a gap. Those who died were someone’s mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, or husband. For the injured, Prime Minister Modi personally visited the hospital and assured that they would receive the best medical care. Although the terrorists will eventually face justice, citizens still hope for a future where such attacks never happen again—where everyone can live without fear.

My heartfelt condolences go to every family that has lost a loved one. No words can fill the void they are left with. All I can hope is that no more gardens of innocent lives are destroyed. Our country has paid a heavy price, and it deserves lasting peace.
