Dreamliner-Deathliner

Published on:

The day of June 12, 2025, will be remembered as Black Thursday in the history of India. As soon as the news of the Air India Dreamliner plane crash came in the afternoon, videos showing the horrific scene started coming one after the other on social media. The pictures of the accident that went viral were so horrific that even the human soul trembled. Only then did the countrymen realize that a big untoward incident had happened. What appeared by the evening was terrible. Dead bodies were strewn on the streets. It was also difficult to identify that only skeletons were left. It cannot be called a cruel attack of nature, human error or technical error. The faces that had boarded the plane a few minutes earlier with smiles were now reduced to rubble. When the plane became a fireball and fell on the medical college hostel, a black smoke balloon spread in the sky. There was darkness all around. As many as 265 people, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, talented and business tycoons and medical students who were hit by the accident, were killed in the accident. The death of so many people, including British, Portuguese and Canadian travellers, is shocking. Each victim's family has its own sad story. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu visited the spot. Everyone is shocked by the accident. The horrific accident has raised serious questions about the safety of air travel. The Dreamliner 787 is considered to be a very powerful aircraft in itself. It has the ability to fly for 14 hours at a time. There were already concerns about how the Dreamliner became a deathliner. Questions about the safety of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner have been raised several times in recent years. In April 2024, Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour revealed that there were flaws in the 787's fuselage service, which could cause the aircraft's fuselage to weaken prematurely. Salehpour claimed that "shortcuts" were made in production, which put extra pressure on the joints of the aircraft and could cause "major distress" some time later. He also said that Boeing ignored his concerns and moved him from the 787 project to the 777 project. Subsequently, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched an investigation into Salehpur's claims. In May 2024, the FAA found that employees at Boeing's South Carolina plant had skipped an investigation of wing-to-fuselage joints and showed it to be completed on record. Boeing acknowledged this "misconduct" but claimed that it does not pose an immediate flight safety threat. The FAA had earlier instructed Boeing to re-examine all remaining 787 planes and prepare an action plan for aircraft already in service.

The history of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been full of controversies. In 2013, several countries grounded the aircraft temporarily due to battery problems, fuel leakage and brake related technical flaws. In 2021, the FAA halted deliveries of the 787 until 2022 due to production defects. More recently, a sudden dive incident on a 787 aircraft of LATAM Airlines in March 2024 injured more than 50 passengers, which led to the FAA issuing orders to check the pilot seats. Other Boeing planes have also been embroiled in controversies over safety. Boeing's manufacturing process has been in the dock since the crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 in 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in 2019, which claimed a total of 346 lives.

In January 2024, a Boeing 737 aircraft had an emergency door blown off shortly after takeoff, after which the planes were grounded. Boeing has failed nearly three dozen audits and the U.S. Justice Department opened a criminal investigation. Surprisingly, Sam Salehpour, who exposed the flaws in the Dreamliner, had mysteriously committed suicide. It is not that the chief pilot of the aircraft Captain Sumit Sabharwal and co-pilot Clive Kunder were not experienced. As soon as the flight took off, the captain made a call to the Air Traffic Control. A mayday call is called when an aircraft is in complete danger. This call is made under extreme stress or danger. There have been many air crashes in India in the past, but there are doubts about the steps that need to be taken to make air travel safe. Passengers have already had many complaints about Air India. It is also said that Air India's aircraft are very old, with technical problems continuing. The Tatas acquired Air India on January 27, 2022, since then there has been no expected improvement. Sometimes the hydraulic system of the planes stops, sometimes the passengers complain about the air conditioning being closed. Many experts recommend phasing out old aircraft. What caused the plane crash and who is responsible for it? It will be known through investigation but the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Air India will have to investigate seriously and fix responsibility. The Boeing Company will also have to be held accountable for this national tragedy. There can be no compromise on the safety of air passengers. If security is ignored, passengers will lose their trust.
