Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the decision regarding Shubman Gill’s non-selection was made keeping in mind the team combination and current requirements. According to him, the team needed players in the T20 format who could provide a quick start in the powerplay and perform different roles. Agarkar also stated that there is no question about Gill’s talent, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made due to stiff competition in selection.

He said,

“Shubman is not included for combination more than anything else. We felt that a wicket-keeper at the top will be good for the combination, and the rest, Shubman, is a quality player.”

Shubman Gill’s T20 career has been steadily improving. He has played a total of 36 international T20I matches, scoring 869 runs. While his overall record is quite good, his recent performance hasn’t been particularly impressive. Gill played 3 matches against South Africa and managed to score only 36 runs. His inconsistent performance is considered a major reason for his exclusion from the team.

Following Shubman Gill’s exclusion, Ishan Kishan got a chance in the T20 World Cup squad. Ishan is known for his aggressive batting and ability to score runs quickly. His ability to provide an additional wicket-keeping option was also considered a major factor in his selection. The selectors hope that Ishan Kishan will provide a quick start in the powerplay, strengthening Team India and playing an effective role in the major tournament.
