Stock Market Today February 05: The Indian stock market opened flat. The Sensex opened with a decline of about 60 points at 83,757.54, and the Nifty opened with a marginal loss of just one point at 25,755. Metal stocks put pressure on the market in early trading. The Nifty Metal index was among the top losers. Besides this, defence, realty, pharma, healthcare, infrastructure, commodities, services, and auto sectors were also trading in the red. On the other hand, oil, FMCG, media, and IT sectors were trading in the green.

In early trading, mid-cap and small-cap stocks were seeing declines. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was down 179 points or 0.30 percent at 59,504, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index was down 137 points or 0.80 percent at 17,070. In the Sensex pack, HUL, Infosys, Trent, TCS, ICICI Bank, NTPC, SBI, and HCL Tech were among the gainers. Indigo, BEL, L&T, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, Maruti Suzuki, Axis Bank, Titan, Asian Paints, Power Grid, and ITC were among the losers.

Mixed trading is being observed in international markets. In Asian markets, China’s Shanghai Composite Index fell by 1.03 percent and the Shenzhen Index by 0.88 percent, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined by 0.73 percent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index by 1.07 percent. South Korea’s KOSPI index fell by 2.84 percent. US markets closed mostly lower overnight, with the Nasdaq Composite falling by 1.51 percent. The S&P 500 declined by 0.51 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.53 percent.

The sell-off in metal stocks is also impacting gold and silver prices. Crude oil prices also remained weak. Brent crude was down 2.16 percent at $68 per barrel, and WTI crude was at $63 per ounce. Regional indices on the NSE showed mixed trends. The Nifty Auto index gained 0.20 percent on expectations of stable domestic demand. Meanwhile, the Nifty IT index fell by 0.36 percent, while the Nifty Metal index witnessed a sharp decline of 1.71 percent.
