Stock Market Today Dec 16: Following negative cues from Asian markets, the Indian stock market opened on a weak note. Both Sensex and Nifty fell in early trading due to selling pressure. Sensex was trading around 84,770, down approximately 400 points, after falling by about 300 points in the initial minutes. Nifty also opened in the red, trading down 128 points, or 0.49 percent, at around 25,900.
Top Gainers and Losers Shares

Among 30 Sensex stocks, Eicher Motors was the biggest loser, falling by nearly 3 percent. Axis Bank, HCL Technologies, Infosys, and Titan were also among the major laggards in early trading. Bharti Airtel, however, provided some support to the market, with its shares rising by more than 1 percent.

This weakness was not limited to the major indices, but selling pressure was also observed across broader markets. Both BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices declined by approximately 0.4 percent. Sectorally, metal and financial sector stocks were in the red during the morning session. Nifty Pharma index fell by 0.35 percent, Nifty Private Bank index declined by 0.46 percent, and the Nifty Realty index dropped by 0.59 percent in early trading.
Asian Markets Down Today

Asian markets also saw significant declines, reflecting the overnight losses on Wall Street. Investor sentiment remained cautious as funds continued to move away from US AI-related stocks. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell by 1.27 percent, while South Korea’s KOSPI index declined for the second consecutive session, dropping by 0.75 percent. However, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index remained relatively stable.
