Stock Market Today 08 Jan: Indian stock markets witnessed a marginal decline today due to profit-booking, rising geopolitical tensions, and weak trends from Asian markets. As of 9:23 AM, Sensex was down 108 points or 0.13 percent at 84,852, and Nifty was down 46 points or 0.18 percent at 26,094. The performance of broader market indices was largely in line with the benchmark indices, with Nifty Mid-cap 100 falling 0.32 percent and the Nifty Small-cap 100 declining by 0.14 percent.

In the Nifty pack, Bharat Electronics and SBI Life Insurance were among the top gainers. All sectoral indices, except Nifty Realty and Consumer Durable, were trading in the red. Nifty Metal witnessed the sharpest decline, slipping 1.27 percent.

Analysts say that despite the short-term weakness, the broader positional trend remains bullish, supported by the pattern of higher highs and higher lows on the daily charts. Asian-Pacific markets saw mixed trading in the morning session following declines on Wall Street amid rising geopolitical tensions fuelled by comments from US President Donald Trump.

In Asian markets, China’s Shanghai Composite index rose 0.09 percent, the Shenzhen index fell 0.2 percent, Japan’s Nikkei index dropped 0.96 percent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index declined 1.26 percent. South Korea’s KOSPI index gained 0.64 percent. US markets were mostly lower overnight, although the Nasdaq rose 0.16 percent. The S&P 500 fell 0.34 percent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.94 percent.
