Stock Market Today 01 Jan: Indian stock markets welcomed 2026 with a positive start, as overall sentiment remained cautiously optimistic, supported by improved domestic technical indicators, despite mixed global cues and absence of major domestic triggers. The Nifty opened 0.17 percent higher at 26,173.30, while the Sensex opened 0.04 percent higher at 85,255.55.

Across various sectors, the FMCG index fell by 1 percent in early trading, while the telecom index gained 1 percent. On the NSE, 10 out of 15 sectors were trading in the green. Nifty Media and Nifty Auto led the gains, while Nifty FMCG and Nifty Pharma were trading in the red.

The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices remained largely unchanged in morning trade. According to analysts, market participants will closely monitor global equity trends, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and institutional fund flows during the session for directional cues. On the institutional front, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued their selling spree for the fifth consecutive session on December 31, offloading shares worth ₹3,597 crore.

The sectoral indices of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) also opened mostly higher. The Nifty Auto index rose by 0.24 percent, Nifty IT by 0.13 percent, Nifty Media by 0.19 percent, Nifty PSU Bank by 0.15 percent, Nifty Pharma by 0.05 percent, and Nifty Consumer Durables by 0.24 percent.

The Indian rupee opened 1 paisa weaker against the US dollar at 89.88. It had closed at 89.87 on Wednesday. Additionally, Indian stock exchanges have published the official trading holiday calendar for 2026, providing investors and traders with early clarity on non-trading days across cash, derivatives, and currency segments. Meanwhile, major international markets in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, the UAE, the UK, and the US will remain closed on New Year’s Day. Furthermore, the stock markets in China and Japan will also remain closed on Friday in observance of the New Year holiday.
