Record UPI Transaction 2025: As the new year 2025 begins, the previous year has left behind several notable milestones in India’s digital revolution. According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI transactions recorded a year-on-year growth of 29 percent in December, reaching a total of 21.63 billion transactions.

At the same time, the total value of these transactions rose by 20 percent annually to ₹27.97 lakh crore. Both the volume and the value of UPI transactions also witnessed a substantial month-on-month increase, highlighting the continued rapid expansion of digital payments in the country.

According to NPCI data, the average daily transaction amount stood at ₹90,217 crore in December, up from ₹87,721 crore in November. An average of 698 million transactions were recorded daily in December, up from 682 million in November. In November, UPI recorded a 32 percent year-on-year growth in the number of transactions to 20.47 billion, and a 22 percent year-on-year growth in transaction amount to ₹26.32 lakh crore.

Meanwhile, transactions conducted through the Instant Money Transfer system (IMPS) reached ₹6.62 lakh crore in December, marking a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year and rising from ₹6.15 lakh crore in November. The total number of IMPS transactions also increased to 380 million, up from 369 million in the previous month. On a daily basis, IMPS transactions averaged ₹21,269 crore, compared to ₹20,506 crore in November.

The number of active UPI QR cards in India has reached 709 million, representing a 21 percent increase since July 2024. Scan-and-Pay has become the default payment mode nationwide when using QR cards at grocery stores, pharmacies, transportation hubs, and rural markets. Person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions continue to outpace person-to-person (P2P) transactions, demonstrating UPI’s dominance in everyday retail payments.

P2M transactions rose by 35 percent to 37.46 billion, while P2P transactions increased by 29 percent to 21.65 billion. Meanwhile, the average transaction value declined from ₹1,363 to ₹1,262, indicating a growing adoption of micro-transactions across areas such as mobility, food, healthcare essentials, and local commerce.
